I'll bet you don't think too much about your teeth do you?

They're just there to chew up your food. Some of you also use them to bite your nails or chew biro tops, whilst others find they're just great for opening crisp packets.

But can you imagine trying to do any of these things using just your gums?

Unfortunately, loads of children your age have already lost some teeth because they didn't take proper care of them. It's a fact that if you don't look after your teeth properly then they can simply rot away!

Q. What makes teeth rot or decay?

A. Eating and drinking too many sugary things, along with not cleaning your teeth properly!

Remember, it takes two full minutes to brush around all your teeth properly and it's best to do this just before you go to bed.

If you're not sure, ask your dentist or hygienist to show you how. He or she will be delighted to teach you how to do a proper job!

You probably already know that fizzy drinks, sweets and biscuits are mostly sugar, and are really bad news for teeth, but did you also know that the worst thing you can do is to swig and nibble throughout the day?

When Mum or Dad bring you to the dentist we'll check your teeth to make sure there's no decay and look to see that they're all growing in their proper places. If we see there's a tiny hole in a tooth then we can fix it before it gets too big. This will save you loads of trouble later on!

Have you heard the expression "A stitch in time saves nine"? - Well, it applies just the same to teeth!

When you are 11 or 12 your dentist might suggest you visit an orthodontist. An orthodontist is a special sort of dentist who can straighten your teeth if they look a bit crooked.

Be sure to use a sportsguard

Be sure to use a sportsguard whenever you play contact sports such as rugby, squash, hockey, etc. They'll protect your teeth and gums from damage, and their wild colours will make your friends green with envy!
