Treatments
Periodic examinations
Regular examinations form the backbone of your dental care. The
time frequency interval will vary according to your mouth and its
disease rate. These examinations will be to check for cancer,
decay, broken restorations and gum disease. Simple treatments might
well be carried out at this appointment as well as fine scaling and
polishing.
Cosmetic techniques
Bleaching (tooth whitening)
If you wish your teeth to be a few shades lighter then this
treatment may well be for you. Following an assessment for your
suitability, specially made trays, which fit in your mouth like a
thin gum shield, are fitted. You wear them at night for 2 hours a
time for about 2-3 weeks with a carbamide peroxide gel inside.
Composite veneers
Broken or mishaped teeth can often be repaired by the simple
addition of a composite filling material. The treatment is
non-invasive, completely pain free, and is undertaken during a
single visit to the surgery. Before and after.
Porcelain veneers
The appearance of malformed or extensively damaged teeth can often
be improved by the addition of porcelain veneers. These are similar
to false fingernails and are bonded to the front of teeth to change
their shape or colour. Before and after.
Crowns
A crown is required when a tooth is badly broken down either by
disease or by trauma. The crown also provides a protective shell to
prevent any further breakdown of the tooth. The making a crown page
illustrates the attention to detail that is required to end up with
a perfectly fitting and comfortable crown. We have now worked with
our local technician, James Webb, for 15 years.
Missing teeth
There are several different ways of replacing teeth, the best
method for you would be explained and discussed. Options include an
implant, a bridge or denture or indeed, sometimes nothing at all.
Referrals
There are several excellent specialists in the area to whom we
refer problem cases for root canal, gum disease and implant work.
Orthodontics and oral surgery are also areas that sometimes need
referral.

Dental care for children
We would normally suggest that young children should come along to
the surgery whilst a parent or guardian is attending a routine
appointment. This will allow the child to gradually familiarise him
or herself with the surroundings (There are also childrens books
and some toys in our waiting room). Then, starting from two or
three years of age, or whenever the child is happy to be seen, a
quick look is usually all that is required.
In addition to regular periodic examinations, special advice or
treatments are sometimes required for childrens' teeth.
-
If fissures are deep on permanent teeth then sealants are
sometimes required to prevent decay.
-
Diet and cleaning advice may be required.
-
As the child's adult teeth grow, straightening (orthodontics) may
sometimes be necessary. We have a consultant orthodontist, Giles
Kidner, who treats patients in the practice on Saturday mornings.
All these factors contribute to giving your child the best possible
chance of perfect teeth in healthy gums.
